Title: How to make a sodium chloride solution I. Teaching Aims: 1. Knowledge objects: 1) Understand basic terms: solute, solvent, solution; 2) Learn how to calculate the mass of solute needed based on the volume and molarity of solution: 2. Ability Objects: 1) Learn the basic procedure of making solution; 2) Learn how to use volumetric flask; 3) Learn how to make a sodium chloride solution using volumetric flask. II. Teaching Key Points: 1) Let students master the three basic terms: solute, solvent and solution; 2) Let students master the laboratory skills involved in making chemical solutions. III. Teaching Approaches: 1) Give tutorials before practical to let students know what they need to do; 2) Give practical to let students make their own sodium chloride solutions by themselves in a two-person group. IV. Teaching Procedures: Step 1 Calculate the weight of sodium chloride needed to make 100 mL of Formula The formula for molarity (M) is: moles of solute / 1 liter of solution or gram-molecular masses of solute / 1 liter of solution. Step 2 Weigh out amount of chemical needed using a balance. Step 3 Dissolve the sodium chloride in a 50 mL beaker. Step 4 Transfer the sodium chloride solution in the beaker to a clean, dry 100 ml volumetric flask. Step 5 Slowly add distilled water to the volumetric flask. Keep adding water until you reach the 100ml mark on the neck of the flask. Step 6 Put the cap on the volumetric flask and thoroughly mix the solution by inverting the flask several times. You now have a sodium chloride solution whose molarity is very accurately known. |
