Good morning everyone
My name is Doug and I am the Principal of theCanadian Program.
Not only am I a teacher but I am also an actor.I have been on the stage presenting many many times. And for those of you whohave been on a stage and presented in front of people before, you will knowthat it is not an easy task. No matter how many times you have presented. Andeven though people may look like it is easy for them to speak in front of alarge or small group of people, it is still a challenging task.
So I want to take this time to remind everyoneabout how each and everyone of us is going to support all of the speakers heretoday, (and all of the speakers you will hear in the future too) by remindingourselves about how to be a good audience.
We want to respect the hard work of the peopleup here presenting. When you are watching a movie or a television showand you talk, it does not affect the people presenting because they havedone their job, probably been paid and they are off doing their next movie orenjoying a vacation somewhere-but when you are watching a live performance andyou talk, it will interrupt the performers because they can see and hearyou. During a live performance, we want to show respect to all of the people onthe stage by listening carefully to every speaker. That means no talking. Evenif you are excited and you want to say something like “This is great” you cannot, because it is still talking and not respectful to the speaker. Even if youwant to whisper something. You cannot because it is still talking and notrespectful to the speaker.
So what can you do to show respect? Applause isan excellent way to say THANK YOU to someone who is presenting. Nodding yourhead is another way to show respect to someone. Looking at, and keeping youreyes focused on the performer or speaker also shows the person you are listeningand that you appreciate their work. And last but not least, standing up talland proud, shows that you care and you are paying attention.
So now that we have talked about “how to be agood audience” we need everyone to demonstrate these skills today. Be a goodaudience. Be very respectful to everyone who comes up to speak today, whichmeans listen carefully, stand tall and proud, face the front and mostimportantly no talking, at all.
This way we can all enjoy and learn from today’scelebration.
Thank you and enjoy today’s special event.
